Short-term paid leaves of absence are available to eligible full-time and regular part-time employees who have completed their three-month introductory period. Employees in their introductory period are not eligible for short-term paid leave benefits. Regular part-time employees are compensated at their regular hourly or salaried rate for approved paid leave.

Employees are expected to notify their supervisor and Human Resources as soon as practicable when requesting leave under this policy.

Required Attendance at Court

Employees will receive up to three (3) days of paid leave per fiscal year for required court appearances that are not related to personal legal matters. Employees must provide documentation of required court attendance to their supervisor or Human Resources prior to the leave whenever possible.

Jury Duty

Employees called for jury duty will receive full regular pay for time spent serving on jury duty. Employees must provide official jury summons documentation to Human Resources. If an employee is released from jury duty early in the day, they are expected to return to work for the remainder of their scheduled workday when feasible. Employees are expected to reimburse the College for any compensation received from the court for jury service.

Bereavement Leave

Bereavement leave is provided to eligible full-time and regular part-time employees following the death of an immediate family member.

Immediate family members includes:

  • Spouse or domestic partner
  • Child, stepchild, or legal ward
  • Parent or stepparent
  • Parent-in-law
  • Sibling or step-sibling
  • Grandparent or grandchild
  • Son-in-law or daughter-in-law
  • An individual who stood in loco parentis to the employee during childhood

Leave Entitlement

Eligible full-time employees may receive up to five (5) paid bereavement days per occurrence. Eligible part-time employees receive bereavement leave on a prorated basis consistent with their regular schedule.

Bereavement leave should be taken in close proximity to the date of death or memorial services. Days do not need to be taken consecutively but must be used within a reasonable timeframe.

Procedures

Employees should notify their supervisor as soon as possible when bereavement leave is needed. Employees may use accrued vacation time for additional time off beyond bereavement leave, subject to supervisory approval.

Human Resources may request reasonable documentation related to the bereavement leave.
