Health Insurance Requirement

Sarah Lawrence College requires all students to maintain adequate health insurance coverage to help cover medical expenses for services not provided through the Health & Wellness Center Health & Wellness

All students will be charged for the college’s plan, but you have the option to waive coverage if you can demonstrate compatible coverage Waiver 

Comparable Coverage:

  • Your plan must meet the following requirements: 
    • Fully compliant with all aspects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
    • Underwritten and administered in the United States.
    • Effective for the entire academic year.
    • Provides in-network non-emergent/urgent and routine care (preventative services) without coverage limitations within a 50-mile radius of the school.
    • No limitations or exclusions on pre-existing conditions.
    • Provides coverage for hospital stays for medical and surgical care and for mental health conditions.
    • Provides coverage for doctor’s office visits for medical and mental health conditions.
    • Provides prescription drug coverage.
    • Provides unlimited medical/hospital benefits without dollar maximum
  • Coverages that do not meet the waiver requirements 
    • Out of State Medicaid plans
    • Out of State HMO plans
    • Health Share plans
    • International plans
    • Travel plans
    • Kaiser Permanente HMO

Student Insurance Plan: Wellfleet (Cigna)

SLC is pleased to offer a comprehensive student health insurance plan that is designed to meet the healthcare needs of students while they attend SLC.  The plan name is Wellfleet, under the carrier Cigna, and the student health care broker is University Health Plan. The Student Health Insurance annual fee for the 2026-2027 academic year is $4,863.  Please learn more about Undergraduate Tuition and Costs.

The Student Health Insurance Plan offers:

  • Affordable, comprehensive medical and mental health coverage
  • Coverage for a full 12-month period (ex: August 15, 2026 – August 14, 2027)  
  • Access to Wellfleet (Cigna) nationwide network of health care professionals and 24/7 on-demand access to physicians through (add info here)

Wellfleet Mental Health Coverage{expander}

SLC offers comprehensive mental health coverage through its Student Health Insurance plan, Wellfleet. The plan covers a wide range of mental health and substance abuse services, including both in-person and telehealth options. Students who have enrolled in the SLC Student Health Insurance Plan are covered for treatment with any off campus licensed mental health clinician at 80% of reasonable & customary charges after a $250 annual deductible.

Wellfleet coverage for therapy and psychiatric visits depends on the provider you choose: 
  • In-Network (Cigna Network): Requires a deductible (typically around $250/year), after which you pay a copayment (ranging from $25 to $60 per session). 
  • Out-of-Network: Reimburses at 80% of "reasonable and customary" rates after the out-of-network deductible is met. You may have to pay upfront and submit a claim.

Using the Health and Wellness Center {expander}

The Sarah Lawrence College (SLC) Health & Wellness Center provides holistic, integrated medical and short-term, solution-focused psychological care to all undergraduate and graduate students on campus. Operating out of Lyles House, the center offers preventative care, crisis intervention, and wellness education, while utilizing a case manager to facilitate long-term or specialized off-campus referrals*

SLC’s Health & Wellness Center does not bill health insurance for on-campus visits.  All services are free of charge with the exception listed below. All students can access care at the Center, regardless of their insurance coverage.

*Please note: Health and Wellness cannot provide all medical and mental health services on campus. When students are seeking medical and/or mental health support that is outside of our scope of practice, students will be referred to off-campus medical and mental health providers. It is recommended that students have a plan in place for continuing care-whether that means maintaining contact with your current provider(s) or establishing care with a specialist in the Bronxville area. I waived the Student Health Insurance Plan and kept my own insurance. Can I still use the Health & Wellness Center?

Yes. All students can access medical and counseling services at the Health & Wellness Center, regardless of their insurance coverage.* Please review Health and Wellness Center for more information.

*Please note that some Health Services may result in charges or require you to use your personal health insurance, such as labs, medications, splints, etc.

 

I am studying abroad. Will my student health insurance cover me?

Students studying abroad are enrolled in a separate health insurance plan GeoBlue specifically designed for international programs. Please contact the Global Educationfor information about your coverage.

 

How do I know if my health insurance qualifies for a waiver?

I am an international student do I need to purchase health insurance?

Yes. International students are required to buy the student health plan unless they have U.S.-based insurance that meets the same requirements as that of U.S. insurance plans. Please review Health Insurance Information  and Health, Safety, and Security  page located in Global Education. 

 

Do I need my insurance to access care at Health and Wellness?

No. The Health and Wellness Center does not bill health insurance for on campus visits.  Appointments can be scheduled using the student portal 

 

I was charged a Wellness Fee. What is this?

This fee is charged each academic year to develop and maintain holistic campus-wide programs and initiatives that promote and support student well-being. This fee is not considered and is separate from health insurance. See the Health and Wellness  medical and counseling services pages for further details on services provided on campus within their scope of practice. Please note, students are financially responsible for certain fee-for-service items in medical services.

Office Visit: There is no charge for office visits provided by the Health & Wellness Center staff.

Medical Visit Fees: In house lab tests, vaccinations and prescription medications are provided for a fee to cover costs. Any medications not available at the Health & Wellness Center may be purchased at a local pharmacy and might be covered by insurance, depending on students' insurance plans. Special diagnostic services such as laboratory tests, X-rays and diagnostic procedures are provided off campus. Consultations with specialists in the community, as well as off-campus diagnostic procedures, are covered according to Sarah Lawrence student insurance only after a referral is made by the Sarah Lawrence Health & Wellness Center staff. Students who waive Sarah Lawrence insurance should check with their own insurance companies regarding coverage.

No-Show / Late Arrival Policy: There is a $15 no-show fee for Medical and Counseling Services appointments.  If you need to cancel your appointment, you must do so via the online patient portal or by phone at 914-395-2350 by 9pm the night prior to your scheduled appointment. If you do not cancel by 9pm the night prior, or if you arrive more than 10 minutes late for your scheduled appointment, a $15 no-show fee will be charged directly to your student account.
