Studying Abroad (Undergraduate Students Only)

If an undergraduate student chooses to study abroad or participate in an exchange program within the country for a semester or year, the student can maintain their F-1 status. The student will continue to be registered at Sarah Lawrence during their time away.

Leave of Absence/Reinstatement

If a student’s plans for program completion change and they drop below a full course of study, they must meet with International Student Services. If a student takes a leave of absence, withdraws voluntarily, or becomes suspended, they are required to change their non-immigrant status, transfer to another school, or leave the United States.

If a student is suspended or required to withdraw from the College, the student must leave the U.S. immediately. The only exception to remain in F-1 status and in the U.S. is through a valid Leave of Absence. This option must be discussed with the Dean of Students and either Shirley Be or Alba Coronel before filing for withdrawal or dropping coursework.

If an international student (holder of F-1 visa) has been out of the U.S. for more than five months, the student will need a new I-20 form and possibly a new visa.

Undergraduate students must contact the Registrar's office (regoff@sarahlawrence.edu) and Graduate students must contact Todd Pettiford (tpettiford@sarahlawrence.edu) as soon as possible to allow enough time to process the paperwork.
