Sarah Lawrence College is committed to providing students with disabilities equal access to its programs, services, and facilities in accordance with Section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The Assistant Dean of Access and Disability Services works with students, faculty and staff to assure that appropriate and reasonable accommodations and services are provided for students with disabilities.

Any student who disagrees with the determination or denial of an accommodation should first contact the Assistant Dean of Access and Disability Services, who will try to resolve the situation informally. The Assistant Dean of Access and Disability Services is the student’s advocate and will work with the student and the faculty member and/or program involved to come to an agreed upon resolution expeditiously.

If a student is dissatisfied with the informal resolution of an appeal or prefers to file a formal complaint, the following procedure shall apply:

  • The student may appeal in writing to the Dean of Accessibility and Title IX Coordinator, or their designee.
  • The appeal must be written within 30 days of the denial of the accommodation and should describe the allegation(s) and include specific facts to support the allegation(s).
  • An investigation, as may be appropriate, will be conducted by the Dean of Accessibility and Title IX Coordinator, or their designee, who may also consult with the Vice President and Dean of Students.
  • The Dean’s decision will be communicated to the student and the Assistant Dean of Access and Disability Services in writing within 10 days of completion of the investigation.

If a student believes they has been discriminated against on the basis of a disability, they should refer to the Student Handbook and the College’s Nondiscrimination Policy for the procedure for filing a complaint.
