MARCH 30, 2011: The Committee on Student Life discussed issues regarding the current smoking policy, including noncompliance with the current policy, exposure to secondhand smoke, and the impact of cigarette butts on the campus landscaping, environment, and grounds crew.  A motion followed this discussion for a letter to be sent to President Lawrence requesting an exploration of options regarding the current smoking policy.

APRIL 20, 2011:  The Committee on Student Life sent a letter to President Lawrence requesting an ad-hoc committee to explore moving toward a tobacco-free campus, among other issues.

OCTOBER 13, 2011:  President Lawrence agreed to form a special task force to “consider the best strategies and timeline for moving us toward a healthier campus atmosphere in regard to the use of tobacco” and “consider if and when this improvement should result in a tobacco-free campus."

MARCH 2, 2012: Smoking Policy Task Force was created.

FEBRUARY 15, 2013: The Smoking Policy Task Force, upon completion of its work, sent the recommendation for a smoke-free campus to the Committee on Student Life and to President Lawrence.

MAY 16, 2013: The recommendation for a smoke-free campus was accepted.

FEBRUARY 10, 2014:  Campus announcement that Sarah Lawrence College would become a smoke-free campus effective fall 2015. The Smoke-Free Campus Implementation Committee was charged with education and preparation of the Sarah Lawrence College community regarding the change in the smoking policy. 

AUGUST 1, 2015: Effective date of the Sarah Lawrence College Smoke-Free Policy.
