Summer Opportunities for Undergraduate Pre-health Students

Why are Summer Experiences Important for Pre-health Students?

The summer is a wonderful opportunity to explore your interest in the health professions, and gain rich and meaningful clinical, research and/or community experiences. Not only do we hope you have the opportunity to engage with wonderful people and patients, gain knowledge, and build new skills, but these opportunities allow you to continue developing and strengthening the Core Competencies that health professional graduate programs look for in their future students.

When should I start looking for Summer Experiences?

Many summer programs open their applications in the late fall - early winter and post application deadlines in early winter (e.g. January/February). As such, Thanksgiving break is a wonderful opportunity to begin considering where you wish to spend your summer and what type of program(s) you wish to engage in. Given many applications close in the late winter - early spring (January to March), starting your search early will ensure you have enough time to prepare and not miss out on a great opportunity!

What do I need to apply?

Program's applications will vary; however, many programs will require the following:

  • Updated Resume
  • Personal Statement
  • Transcripts, Unofficial or Official
  • at least 1 Letter(s) of Recommendation
  • Supplemental Essays/Short Answer Responses

Where Can I find Summer Programs?

Many hospitals offer summer programs geared for undergraduate students pursuing a career in the health professions. Many colleges and universities offer summer undergraduate research programs. Non-profit organizations offer fantastic summer internship programs. We recognize it can be overwhelming to figure out where to start looking, so to help aid in your exploration and application process, we have developed a Summer Opportunities Guide.
