Hospitals that offer Clinical Experiences in the Westchester/NYC Area:

Westchester Behavioral Health Center serves children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly with comprehensive outpatient, day treatment, partial hospitalization, and inpatient services. In addition to clinical treatment, the Westchester Behavioral Health Center is a center for interdisciplinary medical research and education through its academic affiliate, Weill Cornell Medicine.

Northern Westchester Hospital though Northwell Health offers adult and student opportunities to gain healthcare experience through a variety of volunteer, patient experience and exploration programs. Click here for more information!

Currently, volunteers provide support for patients and families through programs and services, such as: Ambulatory Surgery, Cancer Center, Family Health Center, ED, Patient Experience, and more. Click here for more information.

WMC Health offers both general/year-round volunteer opportunities as well as student opportunities in a variety of their hospitals. These include Westchester Medical Center, Maria Faeri Children's Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, etc. Click here for more information and the application.

Volunteers help make Burke Rehabilitation Hospital the unique and friendly facility that it is. Over the years, thousands of individuals, former patients and community organizations have donated their time and talents at Burke. Volunteers have contributed in different areas including friendly patient visits, our gift shop, and helping patients’ friends and loved ones in the Marsal Caregiver Center. 

Volunteer positions offer opportunities to work at St. Vincent’s main campus in Harrison or at its off-site locations supporting our behavioral health clinical and administrative functions. Volunteers work under the supervision of the department Director and report on scheduled days and times.  Some of the administrative duties could include office coordination, filing, data entry, record-keeping and covering phones. Volunteers also can participate in the therapeutic patient-care environment by assisting in groups, providing pet therapy, serving as a Eucharistic Minister on inpatient units, assisting in computer labs and with adolescent school work, assisting in the gift shop, or serving as hospital ambassadors, helping visitors find their way through the hospital. All volunteers are committed to our mission of respect and compassion for ourselves and others, excellence in service, the dignity of human life and commitment to the community. 

Volunteers at Montefiore work in both patient and non-patient settings in more than 200 departments. Every effort is made to match each individual with an appropriate and satisfying assignment.

Montefiore offers a Mentoring in Medicine program through the Emergency Medicine Department which provides undergraduate students an opportunity for volunteer work, shadowing, mentorship and community service.

Hospital for Special Surgery is among the top-ranked for orthopedics and rheumatology. If you are interested in volunteering with them in any of their NYC campuses, please click here, to see the steps that need to be taken to volunteer at HSS. 

As a teaching hospital, Mount Sinai is dedicated to providing opportunities for college students and allied health trainees to gain skills and experience in their area of study. Mount Sinai has a solid relationship with many local colleges and schools and opportunities for clinical and non-clinical students. At NYU commitment time lengths vary from program to program (4 – 12 months). NYU Langone Medical Center encourages students to volunteer and understand that the time commitments of their volunteer programs do not always mesh well with high school or university semester schedules. They offer a select few programs that may be able to make accommodations, depending on the time of year and volume of applications. Please let them know if you need to work volunteering around a school schedule and they will see what is available.

This program offers students the opportunity to gain patient interaction experience and learn about medicine through emergency department (ED) observation, approved structured tasks, and a series of monthly lectures. Participants rotate through the following clinical areas of the ED at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Opens in a new tab: adult emergency services, pediatric emergency services, and urgent care. During these rotations, participants assist patients as well as NYU Langone and Bellevue physicians, nurses, and staff.

As a member of Project Healthcare students is given the unique opportunity to play an active role in inpatient care in one of NYU’s active emergency departments. Through hands-on experience, in one of New York City’s active emergency departments, volunteers are able to explore a diverse array of interests and are exposed to the reality of a career in medicine. 

Mount Sinai offers volunteering opportunities at their Eye and Ear Infirmary to assist staff, provide administrative support, and become a member of the NYEE Care team. There are clinical and non-clinical areas and they will help you choose what area works best for you based on your background and experience. 

New York Cares is a non-profit that matches area volunteers with projects by location, availability, and areas of interest. There are some listings that provide opportunities for patient interaction
