Sample Course Sequences

We have created examples of four-year course plans to use as a guide as your plan your course schedule at Sarah Lawrence. Please note that these do not include all of the recommended courses for students interested in the allied health professions (please contact the pre-health program for more information regarding these pre-requisites). We recommend discussing your course plan with your don and/or Melinda Perlo Cohen throughout your time at Sarah Lawrence to ensure you are effectively preparing yourself for further study in the health professions.

The Direct Route

This route requires that you complete all pre-requisites and the MCAT by summer (preferably by the end of June) after your junior year.

Notes to Consider:

  • This is NOT the only path to the MCAT in 3 years. Some courses can be moved around.
  • You may take the Organic I and II: Interactive guided inquiry courses before General Chemistry
  • Biochemistry can be taken after Organic or concurrent with the 2nd half of Organic Chem
  • REMEMBER: MCAT PREP IN SPRING OF JUNIOR YEAR IS LIKE ANOTHER COURSE. YOU CAN TAKE THE EXAM AS LATE AS END OF JUNE, BUT SOONER IS BETTER!

A Note about Timing

One key factor in developing a four-year course plan is determining when you wish to apply to health professional school. In fact, deciding when to apply is one of the most important and often most difficult decisions to make as there is no set time that works for everyone. It's a very personal decision. You should plan to apply once and only when you feel your pre-health portfolio is at its strongest (grades, entrance exam scores, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities). Decisions about when to apply should result from a reflection of your academic record and accomplishments in respect to the admission standards of your programs of interest. The majority of Sarah Lawrence applicants apply in their senior year or 1-2 years post-graduation. Melinda is available to help you assess your readiness and determine the best timing for application.

Glide/Gap Year

Having 4 years to complete all of your prerequisite courses allows for much more flexibility.  Many of the courses can be moved around. A few general recommendations:

  • Start the natural sciences with biology or chemistry, unless you are too excited about physics to wait. Physics isn't a prereq for anything else.
  • Try to take a course in the social sciences by sophomore year, to see if you like learning about people!
  • The key sequence is: Gen Chem > Organic Chem > Biochemistry

Notes:
You may take the new Organic I and II: Interactive guided inquiry courses before General Chemistry
Biochemistry can be taken after Organic Chemistry or concurrent with the 2nd half of Organic
