New Residential Student FAQs

Is on-campus housing available for all new students?

Yes, housing is both required and guaranteed for first-year students at SLC, including new transfer students (students living with family close to campus may request an exception if they wish.)

Do new students need to apply for housing?

Yes, even though housing is guaranteed for first-year students, all students who intend to live on campus must complete a housing application for the academic year ahead. Your complete housing application and affirmation of the adjoining housing license agreement will provide our office with the necessary information to assign you to a residence hall (limited spaces within shared on-campus apartments are also available to new students).

Is a deposit required for living on campus?

Yes, a $450 housing deposit is required to validate your housing application; please note that for all NEW students, the $500 non-refundable enrollment fee fully covers this required deposit. Students who have paid the enrollment fee do not need to pay an additional deposit to live on campus for the 2022-23 academic year.

When can I move in?

The College will welcome all new students to move onto campus on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2022. Move-in times and other details will updated here and emailed to students by mid-summer, but you can plan on arriving on Aug. 31 in the meantime. Please note Sarah Lawrence lists all official check-in and check-out dates within its academic calendars to better assist students and their families in planning ahead.

When will I know who I’ll be living with?

Residential Life intends to have all assignments posted in early July.

Can I pick who lives in my room/apartment?

You can request a roommates via the THD Housing Portal; all assignments are made on a space-available basis at the discretion of Residential Life. Please note, that you will need to fill out the housing license and agreement BEFORE requesting any roommate(s). Roommates must RESPOND to a request and must be approved by each student in order for them to be potential matches for the upcoming academic year.

Does my housing cost depend on what room I get assigned to?

No. Sarah Lawrence has one flat rate for housing regardless of room type or location. The current rates room, board and other costs of attendance can be found online on the College's Financial Aid's Tuition & Cost page.

How do I change my meal plan?

Meal plans are selected via the THD Housing Portal and your selection may be changed ONE time between when you first select your plan and the 2nd week of classes. Please note that meal plans are required for all residential students, with limited exceptions for those with authorized medical or religious exemptions.

What does my room come with?

The College supplies a bed frame, a standard-sized twin mattress, desk, chair, and dresser. Please note that furniture provided by the College cannot be exchanged, removed or stored. Additionally, free toilet paper and garbage bags are always available at Campus Operations in Andrews House (the Purple Door) as well in the lobby of Hill House.

Will I have access to a kitchen?

Most first-year students are assigned to traditional halls without kitchens, although some have community kitchenettes. Your room assignment will determine whether or not you have direct access to a kitchen. You can find a full list of student residences and their amenities here.
