LOLZ, CONFERENCE TOPIC!

In my personal life my interest include: humor, food, and actively avoiding the gym. I wasn't quite sure writing a "how to evade the gym" blog would be a successful conference project. I also felt that if someone wanted to read/see a blog about food you could just follow your younger cousin on Instagram. So, I chose to discuss the development and effects of humor in social media; with Vine's six seconds videos, Twitter's 140 character lock, Instagram's Selfie-Olympics, and YouTube's comedy content. At this point of my conference idea, I am not sure where I want to focus the development of humor's in and out of social media. With such a general topic I can discuss internet trolls, internet memes, internet language (LOLZ, ALL THE FEELS), ect. If you can help me try to focus my topic please comment below, I will gladly watch a myriad of cat videos for the betterment of my blog.

This will be a fun one to read : )

An exploration of how the medium alters humor through the broad reach and accessibility of content; ability to create & share it; new forms (i.e. Vine, etc) would be super interesting. Social media both puts constraints on context (140 characters, 6 seconds) but its reach is expansive. Consider creating your own content and seeing how quickly and how far it spreads. And use your project as an excuse to avoid the gym : )

I think this is a great topic! It would be cool if you for example looked at a few "famous" people on Vine and how they have developed. It might also be interesting to look at how, or if, humor has changed through social media?

I love this idea! Different jokes that started off small, such as the selfie-olympics, have really developed into stand-alone branches of humor that have been adopted by a wide variety of people. Why are people so obsessed with cats? Is our attention span really so short that the only humor we can make time for is 6 second clips on vine? It's interesting, sometimes I can't even finish those videos because I get bored!

I love this idea so much! It'll be a lot of fun to explore because nowadays, social media humor has really impacted the way people interact when in actual social situations. So to explore the way that social media has reached past it's already large reach and into our everyday lives and the way we perceive humor is really interesting. Really excited to read all about this!

I love it! This idea sounds funny, introspective, and exciting! Social media has definitely impacted and diversified society's way of viewing and perceiving humor. Excited to read more!

Also, consider language, tone, and intended meaning. Humor can be lost in translation, esp when it's text based. And this topic screams looking at audience (intended, imagined, interactions and collaborations with). I think you'll like the piece by Erving Goffman we'll be reading in a few weeks (Presentation of Self in Everyday Life).

I agree, this should be really fun to read. Its always more fun to work on projects that really connect with your own life, which I get the sense this does for you. There are so many directions to go with this topic-- you could certainly even get into how long-standing comedians, that came on the scene before social media, have branded themselves online and if and how their comedic technique has shifted at all when placed in the online medium. Fun topic!
