Sexual Assault Task Force

Sarah Lawrence College has a long-standing history of providing sexual assault trainings and educational programs for incoming students, resident advisors (RAs) and faculty advisors. Early in the Fall of 2013 the Dean of Studies/Title IX Officer convened a Sexual Assault Task Force comprised of students, faculty and administrators to address the sexual assault issues that were appearing on college campuses. The SLC Task Force engaged with the campus community through Town Hall meetings throughout the Fall of 2013 and reviewed 4 distinct areas for enhanced community engagement:

  1. Campus Communication
  2. Campus Education
  3. SLC Sexual Harassment, Misconduct and Assault Policies
  4. SLC Sexual Harassment, Misconduct and Assault Procedures

The Task Force made recommendations at the end of the Fall 2013 semester to the Dean of Studies/Title IX Officer and the President of the College which were accepted and implementation began. The recommendations were categorized as Immediate, Mid-term and Long-term.

Immediate (Spring 2014)—including, but not limited to:

  • What to do if You’ve Been Sexually Assaulted posters throughout campus to improve communication regarding on- and off-campus resources and SLC policies and procedures.
  • Date Safe Project campus presentation for the entire campus community
  • Creation of an accessible, distinct SLC Sexual Assault Resources webpage: my.slc.edu/safe

Mid-term (Summer 2014-Fall 2014)— including, but not limited to:

  • Implementation of an online Consent & Respect course required for all new incoming students
  • Enhanced relationship with Westchester Victim Assistance Services for streamlined student access to WVA Victim Advocates
  • Comprehensive Threat-Assessment Training for SLC Threat Assessment Team
  • Additional Bystander Training program for all new incoming students.
  • Ongoing Campus Dialogues to facilitate communication around policies and procedures (3 campus dialogues were held in Fall 2014)

Long-term (Spring 2015)— including, but not limited to:

  • Date Safe Project Campus Presentation scheduled for entire student body (January 29, 2015)
  • Sexual Assault Campus Climate Survey (February 2nd-March 16th 2015). 
  • Clarification of understanding with NYP Lawrence Hospital ER regarding access to SAFE clinicians and rape kit procedures.
  • Improved campus Sexual Assault Resources website with enhanced navigation and interactivity
  • Adoption of campus-wide Affirmative Consent policy (April 20, 2015).
  • Collaboration with SLC Film Department to bring college-focused sexual assault educational film, The Hunting Ground to entire campus community (April 27, 2015).

Fall 2015-Spring 2016 

  • Review and disseminate Sexual Assault Campus Climate Survey results and design responsive campus programming

Fall 2016-Present

The Sexual Assault Task Force completed its charge in Spring 2016.  Beginning Fall 2016, all Sexual Violence Prevention & Support education and programming will be carried out by the Student Life Subcommittee for Sexual Violence Awareness & Education.  The Title IX Coordinator, Dean Allen Green (agreen@sarahlawrence.edu; 914-395-2527), will remain responsible for the oversight of all sexual violence policies and procedures.
